About Us

History

We believe that you can tell a great deal about any church by looking at what it has stood for in the past. It can give you an idea as to where that church is going.

Ascension Lutheran Church was organized on September 22, 1987, by Lutherans in the Waterloo/Cedar Falls area who desired continued faithfulness to the American Lutheran Church’s Statement of Faith.

What began as Sunday evening “Prayer and Praise” services developed into a thriving congregation committed to our mission statement: “Building on the Word, we faithfully preach, Biblically teach, and warmly reach our world for Christ.”

Those who were charter members of Ascension Lutheran Church totaled 334, of which 261 were confirmed members and 73 baptized members. These charter members of the Ascension Congregation voted to become a charter member of the newly-formed American Association of Lutheran Churches (AALC) on November 8, 1987.

We were a nomadic congregation from 1987-1991 meeting for worship in various locations. In April 1989, land was purchased at our current location of Greenhill and Maynard. Leaning heavily on volunteer labor for our first building, our first regular worship service in the new building was held on September 15, 1991.

Ascension has been blessed to have pastors committed to the truth of God’s Word.

Ascension has also mentored three seminarians as they have served their internships here under the supervision of our pastors.

Ascension has always had as a foundation that we are blessed to be a blessing. Because of this belief, the congregation has strongly supported, with time, talents and treasure, ministry to our community and to the ends of the earth. Circle of Friends began in 2003 as an outreach to feed the hungry and continues throughout the summer months serving free meals in Lincoln Park. Ascension was also instrumental in the formation of Valley Lutheran School and is a member congregation. We support both short and long-term missionaries and have supported the planting of new congregations.

As our church family and ministry opportunities have grown, so has our need for an expanded facility. Phase II included expanding our kitchen, adding additional Sunday school classrooms, a new nursery, and a new sanctuary which opened in September of 2012.

What a blessing it is to see how God has provided for and used Ascension for the past 30 years. We know that just as God has been faithful, He will continue to guide and provide in the days ahead.
